The Foundation for Uncompromised Excellence
In 2002, Virginia athletics introduced “Uncompromised Excellence” as our brand statement to support the department’s 10-year goals. Click here to review the athletics department’s mission statement and goals.
During the 10-year period from 2002 through the spring of 2012, Virginia athletics experienced the most successful decade in its history, winning seven NCAA team championships and 53 ACC championships while graduating 93 percent of student-athletes who completed their eligibility. More than $350 million was raised during this 10-year period, including $130 million for the construction of John Paul Jones Arena and $140 million in annual giving for scholarships, academic support and operational budget support.
The Next 10 Years
To celebrate the success during that initial 10-year period, a donor appreciation event was held with special guest Earth, Wind & Fire at John Paul Jones Arena on Feb. 23, 2013. At this event, the goals and fundraising targets for the 10-year period from 2013 through the spring of 2022 were introduced.
In recent years, expenses associated with competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference and as a Power 5 conference member have increased as a result of conference expansion and changes in NCAA legislation, including providing the full cost of attendance as part of athletics scholarships. We remain committed to the pursuit of Uncompromised Excellence and achieving our goals to win 12 NCAA championships and 70 ACC championships through the spring of 2022. Now in the fourth year of the current 10-year period, Virginia has won 24 ACC and six NCAA titles through May 2017.
The All In For Excellence fundraising initiative was launched in February 2015 to support student-athlete scholarships, including the full cost of attendance, scholarship endowment, and operational support. The 2017 fundraising target is $24.2 million. The 2017 Fundraising Target graphic on the New Challenges tab provides additional information on the components that make up the annual goal. Over the duration of the second 10-year goal period, which lasts through the spring of 2022, a total of $264 million will need to be raised to achieve the goal. Through December 31, 2016, $97.8 million has been raised.
